TCA Peels

What is a TCA Peel?

The Transformative TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peel is a medium-depth peel designed to deeply exfoliate and rejuvenate the skin, addressing concerns like hyperpigmentation, acne scars, sun damage, and fine lines. This peel penetrates below the surface, stimulating new cell growth and collagen production, leading to a more even skin tone, refined texture, and visible improvement in overall skin health.

TCA Peels are perfect for those seeking a targeted solution to deeper skin issues, revealing a luminous, youthful complexion after the healing phase.

Benefits of a TCA Peel-

  • Reduces hyperpigmentation, sun spots, and age spots, creating a more even skin tone.
  • Smooths acne scars and enhances skin texture for a clearer, more refined complexion.
  • Boosts collagen production, firming the skin and softening fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Helps to repair UV damage, leaving the skin brighter and rejuvenated.

What's the difference between a TCA Peel and a Jessner Peel?

Understanding the Difference

Jessner Peel and TCA Peel are both medium-depth chemical peels that rejuvenate the skin, but each offers distinct benefits suited to different skin concerns and goals.

Jessner Peel

The Jessner Peel is a blend of three main active ingredients: lactic acid, salicylic acid, and resorcinol. Together, these ingredients effectively exfoliate the outer layers of skin, addressing issues like acne, pigmentation, and uneven texture. Because it’s a multi-acid formulation, the Jessner Peel works especially well for clients with acne-prone or oily skin, helping to unclog pores, reduce congestion, and brighten dark spots.

  • Best For: Acne, congested pores, hyperpigmentation, and dullness.
  • Downtime: 5-7 days of peeling, with skin darkening and peeling before revealing fresh skin underneath.
  • Ideal Candidates: Those looking to treat breakouts, pigmentation, and texture irregularities, especially in oily or acne-prone skin types.
  • Frequency: Can be repeated every 4 weeks for a series of treatments, then maintained with 1-2 treatments per year.

TCA Peel

The TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peel penetrates deeper than the Jessner Peel and is especially effective for treating hyperpigmentation, acne scars, and fine lines. TCA Peels stimulate collagen production and promote more profound skin rejuvenation by causing the skin to shed damaged cells and regenerate new, healthier skin. TCA Peels can also be customized in concentration, allowing for more precise treatment based on individual skin concerns.

  • Best For: Hyperpigmentation, acne scars, deeper wrinkles, and significant sun damage.
  • Downtime: Typically involves 5-7 days of peeling, with potential redness, flaking, and tightness as the skin renews.
  • Ideal Candidates: Those looking to reduce deeper pigmentation, soften scars, and achieve more intensive rejuvenation. It’s suitable for most skin types but may require more aftercare.
  • Frequency: Usually performed every 4-6 weeks as a series, with 1-2 treatments per year for maintenance once desired results are achieved.

Jessner Peel vs. TCA Peel for Acne and Scarring

If you're struggling with acne, the Jessner Peel is an excellent starting point. This peel works effectively to target the underlying causes of acne, such as clogged pores, excess oil production, and inflammation. The combination of salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol in the Jessner formula helps to exfoliate the skin, unclog pores, and reduce acne lesions, leading to clearer, smoother skin. It also helps in improving overall skin texture and tone, making it a great option to reduce active breakouts and initial inflammation.

However, once your acne has settled and you’re left with acne scarring or post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation(PIH), the TCA Peel becomes an excellent next step. The TCA (Trichloroacetic Acid) Peel penetrates deeper into the skin, making it more effective for treating the residual effects of acne, such as dark spots, uneven skin tone, and scarring. TCA stimulates collagen production, which helps to rebuild the skin’s structure and improve the appearance of scars. It is particularly effective for fading stubborn pigmentation and smoothing out textured skin caused by acne.

By starting with the Jessner Peel to address active acne, and transitioning to a TCA Peel once acne is under control, you can create a targeted treatment plan that not only clears current breakouts but also addresses long-term concerns like scarring and hyperpigmentation. This two-step approach can help you achieve clear, even-toned, and rejuvenated skin.

Is there any Skin Preparation needed?

To maximize the effectiveness and safety of the TCA peel, we recommend prepping the skin with a 1% Vitamin A serum or retinoid for at least two weeks before treatment. This ensures the skin is acclimated to active ingredients, minimizing downtime and enhancing the peel’s results. Discontinue the serum 48 hours before the peel.

How does a TCA Peel work?

The TCA peel works by applying trichloroacetic acid to exfoliate the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and reach the upper dermis. This controlled exfoliation triggers an inflammatory response, which prompts the skin’s natural healing process. Damaged cells are replaced with new, healthy skin cells, resulting in reduced pigmentation, fewer visible scars, and a more uniform skin texture.

As the skin heals, it peels to reveal fresher, healthier skin underneath, leaving a noticeable improvement in areas with sun damage, pigmentation, and scarring.

How often can the Jessner Peel be performed?

The TCA Peel can be done every 4-6 weeks, depending on the depth of the peel and individual skin needs. A series of 2-3 treatments is often recommended for optimal results.

Maintenance treatments may be done 1-2 times per year once skin goals are achieved

What to expect

During application, you may feel a warm tingling or stinging sensation, and the skin may appear frosted temporarily. Skin will begin peeling around day 2 and continue for 5-7 days. The peeling process may include redness, dryness, and a darkened appearance as dead skin cells slough off.

Expected Effects During Healing:

  • Initial redness and tightness, followed by darkening and peeling of the treated area.
  • Day 2-5: Peeling begins, revealing fresh skin underneath.
  • Skin may feel dry and tight; discomfort can be minimized with a soothing balm.

What contraindications are there?

  • Roaccutane: Must be off oral A 1 year prior to peel procedure
  • Hair Dye: Wait 24 hours before peel Hair Removal: Waxing or laser hair procedures need a 1-2 week delay prior to peel
  • Laser RX: May need a 6 month delay depending on laser procedure Sun Exposure: Peel cannot be performed on clients with recent sun exposure. Must refrain from sun exposure/tanning for a min of 2 weeks prior and post procedure
  • Hormone Treatment: Pigmentation may be stimulated for patients on HRT, are pregnant or lactating. Results/success may be limited whilst hormonal imbalance exists

What is the Post Peel Downtime care?

  • Avoid applying water or oil based products for 6 to 8 hours or preferably overnight. Water can push the solution deeper into the skin and oil can neutralise the action of the peel.  It will take 7-14 days to see the full results from the peel.
  • Cleanse, moisturise and apply sunscreen for the next 7 days.
  • Apply Ice packs or use a fan to relieve burning- just be careful to not let the skin dry out from the fan.
  • Peeling will commence around day 2 and last for 5-7 days but can begin to re peel at day 7 for another week.
  • Reintroduce actives when the skin has stopped peeling and then a further 7  days after that.
  • Application of heavier hydrators or semi occlusive balm aids the healing phase and reduces discomfort caused by tautness and constant desquamation
  • DO NOT pick, peel or scrub dry skin with a cloth. Gently remove when washing face in circular motions with fingers.
  • Refrain from activity that will cause excessive sweating during the first few days after the peel
  •  Skin IS expected to turn pink/brown and flake off, this is apart of the process. Peeling will begin around day 2 and continue to day 7-10. We will follow up at day 7 to see how skin is tracking.
  • It is best to let the skin breathe post treatment and avoid wearing heavy makeup for 5-7 days post treatment as this is an important period since the skin will be in its healing/ renewal process. If you have a mineral makeup you can apply that if absolutely necessary.
